The safety razor is a shaving tool that no classic shaving enthusiast would be without. Introduced in 1874 in Great Britain, it was an advance and quickly caught on in Europe and North America. Before the invention of the safety razor, the straigt razor was dominant. Its use was costly and complicated. If men could afford it, they visited the barber. The safety razor was a breakthrough. From then on, men shaved easily at home.

What is a safety razor and how do I change the blades?

The shave is done with a thin, double-sided blade made of strip steel. The cutting blades protrude just outside the razor, so there are no injuries. Blades are held in the razor either straight or curved. You will find different closures for this:

Screw cap:

The classic, you screw the head (holder for the blade) onto the handle and thus attach the razor blade.

Butterfly lock

There are no individual parts with this variant. How does the razor open? A mechanism can be opened to two sides by pressing or turning. This makes them resemble a butterfly, which explains the name.

Torsion safety razor

The special thing about this is that the blade is angled and curved in the razor. This results in a sharp and close shave. The torsion plane is recommended for strong beard growth and stubble. It is less suitable for those new to planing. Experience in shaving with a plane is clearly an advantage.

Open versus closed comb safety razor, what is the difference. What is the comb on a straight razor?

The safety razor with closed comb

The edges that are visible above and below the razor blade are called the comb. Actually, only the lower part is called a comb. What does closed comb mean now? In the variant, exactly this lower edge is a shade in front of the edge of the razor blade when shaving. The shave feels smoother on the face.

The safety razor with open comb

The open comb is characterised by tooth-like gaps that visually resemble the tines of a comb. The distance between the comb and the cutting edge of the blade is greater than with the closed variant. The shave feels less gentle. The distance is greater, so the blade has more chance of hurting you. The open comb is therefore more suitable for the experienced shaver or type of shaver.

What is the advantage of the open comb on the safety razor?

Due to the larger distance, more hairs fit. The advantage is that particularly thick or wiry hairs are more easily removed with this variant of the razor. The larger blade gap makes it easier to remove the shaving foam from the facial skin.

Now the next riddle. What is the blade gap or soap gap? Are there safety razors with adjustable blade gap?

The gap between the blade and the comb forms an opening, the blade gap or soap gap. This is where the shaving foam and the cut stubble are discharged. The edge of the comb is called the foam edge. With the open comb, this effect is magnified. Due to the coarse toothing, there are additional openings in the horizontal plane through which beard hairs and shaving foam are drained off.

The adjustable blade gap, the king of razors?

Basically, the larger the gap, the closer the shave. The smaller the gap, the smoother the shave. So would it be nice if you could decide which shave you want every time you shave? Razors with an adjustable blade gap are ideal for this. Here you can set different opening widths.

The subject of razor blades for the safety razor

We are always asked this question: Which are the best razor blades for the straight razor? What do I have to look out for?

We use blades from Erbe Solingen or Merkur Solingen. In our opinion, there is no such thing as the best razor blade. The question of the blade always leads to the next question: How often do I have to change the razor blade in the razor? There is no general answer to this question. The duration is highly dependent on various factors:

  • How thick are the beard hairs?
  • How well have you prepared the skin and hair for the shave?
  • Do you clean the shaver and the blade properly after shaving?
  • Do you dry the blade after shaving?

A good blade should last 8 to 12 shaves. You will notice that the sharpness decreases if the whiskers are not all cut in the first stroke. Another sign is that the plane no longer glides well over the skin.

Some blogs claim that the razor blade can be used from 4 sides. This is nonsense. The razor blade has 2 sides, both of which can be used for shaving.
However, there is no gain in turning the blade. The actual cut is made by the degree that remains after sharpening. This degree does not turn as it does with a razor, but often simply breaks off, leaving the blade permanently blunt.

A major advantage is that the blades only cost a few cents compared to the system razor. And they don't produce any plastic waste. Saving money on the blade is saving money at the wrong end.

In summary, what are the advantages of a safety razor?

The razor is very sustainable. It is mostly made of metal and lasts a lifetime and avoids plastic waste. This is good for the environment, considering how many blades and razors are needed worldwide. The blades are inexpensive. The razors are very stylish and it is a very classic way of shaving.

Now that you know what type of razor you want to buy, the final question remains:

Safety razor or shaving set where to buy?
